The fisher, one of the few animals which can take on the porcupine.
It's fascinating to enter Ken Harjala's showroom in this out-of-the-way taxidermy shop if only to see the variety of mounted animals and fish that inhabit the region. Strangest of all are the small "fisher," imported by the DNR to control the overabundant porcupine population. The mink-like fisher kills porcupines with repeated bites to its face, then devours them through their quilless underbelly. Black bears and deer are on display, of course, but also the rare little pine marten, a cute-looking member of the weasel family. Huge salmon and other Lake Superior fish grace the walls. Ken's wife makes beauitiful fur hats (otter is the most expensive—$165-$200). 28 Cherry St., Allouez, Turn up from the U.S. 41 at the BP station, then immediately only Cherry Street. (906) 337-4224.
