Keweenaw Handicrafts Shop

Keweenaw Handicrafts

The entrance to Keweenaw County is marked by this charming stone shop. The store building is one of Keweenaw County's many appealing W.P.A. relief projects from the Great Depression during the 1930. There are woodland footbridges, a play battleship made of mining poor rock in Kearsarge, rock walls on Brockway Mountain and at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. Relief projects were widespread because of Keweenaw County's 85% unemployment rate during the Depression. Families who had moved downstate for factory jobs came back home when their jobs disappeared.

The shop, now run by the Community Action Agency, sells things made by around 200 craftspeople from the region: wood toys, agate jewelry, quilts, Christmas decorations, afghans, and more. Among the ordinary dolls and kit crafts a few attractive, reasonably priced traditional crafts stand out, including rag rugs and handmade children's sweaters under.
