Au Train River Canoe Trail

-
A slow, easy, relaxing canoe trip of four to six hours begins at the Forest Service boat launch at the Au Train Lake campground. (Follow sign off H-03/Forest Lake Road south of town, turn east.) For a shorter trip, put in at the H-03 bridge south of town.

The placid river twists and turns on its way to Superior. Kingfishers, blue herons, and other wildlife are often seen in its many sloughs. Loons and eagles frequent the lake. There's walleye, perch, suckers, and bullheads in the waterway year-round. Wildlife abounds. For details, go to the Hiawatha National Forest web site and look under "water recreation."

A canoe livery at the Northwoods Resort, (906-892-8114), is just south of the little town of Au Train on Forest Lake Road/H-03. (—April, 2008)
