Au Train Songbird Trail

-
The tape player with recorded bird song is no longer available, but the interpretive signs on the easy two-mile hiking trail still provide a good introduction to birding. 20 species are featured in their likely habitats: woods, bog, field, and the lakeshore, where ducks, shorebirds, and maybe an eagle or osprey may be seen from an observation tower. Morning is the best time for birdsong, followed by dusk. (—April, 2008)
-
Songbird Trail is in the Hiawatha National Forest by Au Train Lake Campground east off H-03/Forest Lake Rd. 4.5 miles south of M-28. (Look for national forest signs). Trail starts by campsite #11. (906) 892-8142. Handicap accessible: call.
