South end of Lake Gogebic: west shore

-
Various beauty spots on public land are on or near the south end of Lake Gogebic. M-64 runs along the west shore, which was developed much earlier than the east shore. The Pines Resort has a small grocery store/bait shop on M-64 just south of the state park.

Lake Gogebic State Park is eight miles south of M-28 at Merriweather. Its beautiful hillside nature trail through old-growth hemlocks and maples is something of a hidden gem. Two miles south of the state park are Alligator Eye and its hiking trail. It's another two miles to Lake Gogebic County Park.

For a real backwoods adventure to one of the U.P.'s prettiest waterfalls, follow the directions — carefully — to Nelson Canyon Falls, south of the shore road, found under Marenisco. Print out a map or take a compass or GPS.
