Gustafson's Smoked Fish
 |
Gustafson's goes way back (to 1964, in fact) as a roadside stop for hunters and campers. Four maple-fired smokers outside are often going full-tilt, smoking whitefish, lake trout, salmon, and menominee (a mild-flavored fish akin to whitefish but drier).
By law, smoked fish can't be shipped without special processing. Gustafson's owes its national reputation to the jerky it produces: beef, turkey, elk, and buffalo — with BBQ! and cajun seasonings — and slilm jims. First-time customers are often hooked, and spread the jerky to friends around the country. Gustafson's also carries some canned groceries, beer and liquor, regional foods like wild rice and Trenary toast, and fishing and hunting gear in season.
4321 West U.S. 2 in Brevort, south side of highway, east entrance to town. (906) 292-5424. Open daily, year-round. In summer 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Otherwise usually 'til 8. Handicap access: one step.
