This way to Brimley gives a better, more interesting sense of the area than the busier route along M-28. And it's shorter, as well.
Take Bus. I-75/Ashmun/Mackinaw Trail out of Sault Ste. Marie. You might want to stop to pick up brochures and information sheets at the helpful Hiawatha National Forest office on Bus. I-75 (906-635-5311). Do not turn onto I-75. Instead, continue south on Mackinaw Trail and turn right (west) onto Six Mile Rd. at the blinker and cemetery.
In seven miles you might enjoy stopping at well-known Great Lakes marine artist Mary Demroske's Mushroom Cap Studio and Gallery (906-248-6632; by chance or by appointment. Baskets, pottery, and her own prints and cards of freighters and lighthouses are for sale. Look for the gray garage on the north side of the road. After eight miles on Six Mile Road you will reach Lake Shore Road and Brimley.
