Wheels of History Museum
 |
Trains of the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic RR once brought logs to the mill town of Bay Mills and took finished lumber to distant markets. The Bay Mills-Brimley Historical Research Society, instrumental in restoring the Point Iroquois lighthouse, has now turned its attention to the local history of railroading, fishing, logging, milling, and early telephones, richly represented in this tiny museum.
The museum occupies a turn-of-the-century wooden coach from the Algoma Central Railroad. The photos of the sprawling, smoke-belching Bay Mills townsite, now almost completely vanished, give rise to contemplation of the transience of man's endeavors. The gift shop and info center is in a caboose.
