Cedar River Pathway

-
Six miles inland from Lake Michigan, an eight-mile trail system of four stacked loops (currently groomed for cross-country skiing) goes along the Cedar River, a trout stream and through cedars and hemlocks. This is part of the Escanaba River State Forest.

In his Hiking Michigan's Upper Peninsula (a must for serious hikers), Eric Hansen calls it "a classic walk in the woods. . . with a seemingly endless parade of pleasant woodland panoramas."

For a shorter, three-mile walk, hike a mile and a half to a bench in a pretty place, then back.

For the first two miles from the trailhead, the trail hugs the river, then goes through rolling, forested terrain. Mountain bikes are allowed. This is a good place to see deer and occasional black bear.
-
Trailhead is at the campground northwest of Cedar River. From M-35, 1 1/2 miles north of the town of Cedar River, take CR 551/River Rd. 6 miles northwest. (906) 786-2351. Wheelchair access: no.
