CEDARVILLE

Region: Les Cheneaux Islands, Drummond Island & the St. Mary's River

Les Cheneaux Maritime Museum
A life saving boat and other historic maritime gear graces the front of the museum.

Like Hessel, Cedarville began as a Euro-American settlement in the 1880s. It was a lumber and fishing port on the central channel of Les Cheneaux. Eventually the village became the provisioning point for summer people with homes on the islands. Since the 1950s, when Cedarville got a branch bank, large supermarket, and hardware store, it has become the region's shopping center. The beautiful LES CHENEAUX COMMUNITY LIBRARY at 75 E. Hodek is in the center of town. It has a most comfortable reading area, a room for events, and a wi-fi internet signal left on after hours so anyone can use it from the parking lot. It's one of five branches of the outstanding Bayliss Public Library in Sault Ste. Marie.

Traditionally Pickford, the inland farming community 13 miles to the north, had been the area's business center. Mackinac Island's many horses spend their winters in stables close to Pickford.
