Creekside Herbs

-
Wendy Wagoner has created a beautiful, multifaceted place that's part herb farm with display gardens, culinary and medicinal herbs, and essential oils for aromatherapy; part teaching space; part gallery of handmade things from regional artists; and part "green" home and garden shop (with casual clothes of organic cotton and hemp, for instance). It's all based on contemporary spiritual thinking from many sources, largely from Wendy's Native American heritage. "Our goal is to promote a sense of connection and integration through our community, to live and do business in a way that demonstrates our priorities."

Display gardens include a sculpture garden, traditional herb garden, medicine wheel garden, and children's area. Behind them is a spiritual trail through the woods, with eight stations so far, starting with "Healing ourselves and the planet, "Visioning," "Meditation," "Being fully present," "Giving thanks," and "walking our talk through demonstration." "Sitting on the porch overlooking a winding stream, you will enjoy a northwoods afternoon. Read a book, have lunch, or just meditate," invites the brochure. "Perhaps you'll catch sight of a blue heron or beaver. Silently join nature's celebration of life."

Potted herbs, perennials, everlastings and scented geraniums are outside on the big deck, under the shop's eaves, along with garden supplies and containers. Creekside sells over 200 herbs and perennials suited to the U.P., including many native plants. Sweetgrass, that evocative accent to Indian crafts, can be purchased here. It's somewhat invasive, so a little, planted in a separate area, can go a long way. The Northern Wild Plant & Seed Cooperative will give classes and provide seeds and cuttings of native plants.

Wendy's partner in life Rick Shapero has put up a 36' geodesic dome for his glass blowing studio (Windblown Glass). He does fall and winter glass blowing demonstrations by appointment.

Other classes include yoga, massage, Reiki (a laying on of hands healing technique), and one-day herb and garden workshops. Call or visit the website for these classes and special days: Artists' Festival, annual Kids' Festival, and native plant and garden tours.

Local and regional artwork makes for a gallery/shop that's far more personal and sincere than gift shops which purchase standard lines. There are hand-blown glass, baskets, fiber, jewelry, and Native American art and pottery, plus skin care products, specialty foods, and books on Creekside's subject areas.
