Region: Les Cheneaux Islands, Drummond Island & the St. Mary's River

CEDARVILLE
 |

Like Hessel, Cedarville began in the 1880s as a lumber and fishing port. It soon became the provisioning point for summer islanders at the head of the Middle Entrance to Les Cheneaux. Since the 1950s, when Cedarville got a branch bank and hardware store, it has become the area's shopping center, with a large supermarket.
Traditionally Pickford had been the area's business center. Until recently that inland farming community had an interesting old store, Pickford Dry Goods. Mackinac Island's many horses spend their winters in stables close to Pickford, incidentally.
For a special treat, rent a small motorboat at the Island View Resort at 17244 South Scenic Drive (turn south at the river from M-134). For $40 you can get a 14-foot runabout for a day with a 15 hp outboard engine. With one you can meander among the many islands in this usually calm part of the Great Lakes and picnic on Government Island.

CEDARVILLE RESTAURANTS
ANG-GIO's
(906) 484-3301

Pizza, pasta, and ample, good breakfasts like the Italian special (eggs, Italian sausage patty, American fries, around $5.99) are the big attractions at Ang-gio's. This versatile place offers an any-time steak and eggs or sandwich menu. A salad bar comes with dinner entrées. Every night there's a different special (around $9). The pizza buffet is Tuesday lunch, Thursday night, and Saturday lunch..

PAMMI'S RESTAURANT
(906) 484-7844

Pammi's started as a coffeehouse and sandwich spot. Then Pammi Harrison added dinner entrées, including a very popular all-you-can-eat Friday fish fry combo ($11): locally caught walleye, whitefish, and lake trout, lightly breaded. Her light, cheerful place won a following with espresso and capppucino drinks, desserts like homemade Brownie Obsession, and a fresh menu for this conservative area, featuring wraps ($5-$6) like portobello chicken (with fresh spinach, provolone, and tomato). She makes her own sauces, so the olive burger ($4.59 with chips) stands out. All sandwiches come with a deviled egg - her mother's idea, and customers love it. Her breakfasts also have an avid following, including gourmet french toast and sausage omelettes.

On the northwest corner of M-129 and M-134. 484-7844. Open year-round. In summer 7-9, in winter 8-8, weekends to 10. Otherwise open 7 am to 9 pm. Handicap accessible. Family friendly.

It's across the street from Cedarville's marina park, where picnic tables let people enjoy a beautiful setting with their meal. Mushroom soup has lots of fans.
