Portage Quilt Shop
The Upper Peninsula has quite a few quilt shops. This one, in a comfortable old house, is one of the most eclectic. Fabrics include Australian and Japanese fabric, primitives and wool, some children's novelty fabrics, and much, much more. Owners Joanne Moros and Judy Stallings go to market every year to buy and keep on top of trends, and they don't let dated stock hang around long. Many old customers buy by mail. A 2008 edition of Quilt magazine devoted 11 pages to the shop and the area. It brought a lot of people in. Look at the website for one-day workshops.46509 U.S. 41, 2 miles southeast of the Michigan Tech campus. Much closer to Houghton, but it doesn't belong with downtown. (906) 487-5500. Mon-Fri 10:30-5:30, Sat 10:30 to 3. Wheelchair-accessible.
