DeTour Passage Historical Museum

-
In 1998 this energetic non-profit group formed and took possession of the lighthouse that marks the DeTour Passage at the southern end of the St. Marys River. The DeTour Light had been built in 1931 at the end of the DeTour Reef, a mile from shore at its nearest point. The society has been selling sweatshirts and lighthouse memorabilia to raise matching money for grants. It's been helped by having a captive audience of people waiting for the ferry. By 2001 it had garnered almost all the $1 million required to restore the concrete lighthouse and turn it into a museum. A donated tugboat will take passengers out to the light when the project is complete.
