North Country Trail: Grand Marais to Muskallonge Lake

-
Far less used than the North Country Trail through Pictured Rocks, this section, part of the Lake Superior State Forest, goes near the Lake Superior shore in an area known for agates and an unusually rich mix of rocks in general. Though the trail is just a mile or so from the gravel road H-58, it has a real wilderness feeling and a lot of interest and variety. It goes up and down steep, forested sand ridges of 50 or 100 feet, so it's rated moderate to difficult. Views of the lake and shore alternate with areas through the ridges' pine and oak.

The 3-mile Blind Sucker Pathway lets hikers make a 7.6 mile loop. The path uses an old railroad grade, not especially scenic, that parallels the Blind Sucker Flooding and connects Blind Sucker Camp grounds #1 and #2 with the Lake Superior Campground and beach.

For former North Country Trail newsletter editor Wes Boyd's trail notes to this and other portions of the North Country Trail, visit www.northcountrytrail.org , then find "Explore the Trail" and click on "Upper Michigan."
