Delaware Copper Mine
This early Keweenaw copper mine was in operation from 1847 to 1887. Today it's privately owned and operated as a visitor destination. Visitors get to go underground. On the scenic grounds visitors can also see evidence of prehistoric mining pits made by the unknown ancient miners and the picturesque ruins of the pump house and hoist house made of grey amygdaloid rock from the first mine shaft. There's also a pen with miniature deer.Take U.S. 41 to Delaware, 38 miles north of the Houghton-Hancock bridge or 12 miles south of Copper Harbor. 289-4688. Open daily from mid-May thru mid-Oct. Guided tours from mid-June thru Labor Day; open 10-6 with last tour at 5:15. From Memorial Day to mid-June and from Labor Day thru Oct only self-guided tours are offered, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For both tours adults are $8, children 6-12 $4, children under 6 free
