This early Keweenaw copper mine was in operation from 1847 to 1887. Today it's privately owned and operated as a visitor destination. Visitors get to go underground. On the scenic grounds visitors can also see evidence of prehistoric mining pits made by the unknown ancient miners and the picturesque ruins of the pump house and hoist house made of grey amygdaloid rock from the first mine shaft. There's also a pen with miniature deer.
The 40-minute tour takes visitors 110 feet into the first and second levels of the main shaft, involving a hundred feet of stairs. People enjoy the short tour and picturesque setting. You can learn much more about mining at the Quincy Hoist and Mine tour in Hancock or the Adventure Mine tour near Mass City in Ontonagon County.
