Eckerman, a mile north from M-28 on the way to Paradise, began as a station on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad in 1889, the year it got its post office. Unlike many other logging villages, Eckerman is lucky to still be a dot on the state highway map, with a post office and a small collection of houses. The Bear Butt Inn restaurant is what really puts Eckerman on the map for lots of vacationing downstaters.

BEAR BUTT BAR & GRILL

Good food draws people back to this friendly northwoods bar. The tone is set by Maggie the greeter dog, a border collie. The old stuff on the walls includes traps, saws, logging photos, and the namesake mounted bear hindquarters. Best known for babyback ribs (around $22 for full slab, $17 for half slab) and a 1 lb. pork chop marinated in a garlic sauce ($15 or so), all with soup or salad and baked potato or home-cut fries. Prime rib ($19 for 12 oz. and $21/lb.) is served Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. For lighter appetites, there's lemon-pepper or garlic-tarragon whitefish (around $13), soup and chili ($2 for baby bowl to $4 for papa bowl), and meal-size salads like chicken Caesar ($9). Half-pound burgers are really good, too, ($6 to $8.25 with fries).
The bear store and its online counterpart carry a large line of Bear Butt souvenirs. Owner-managers Tom and Lynn Guy don't put up with bad behavior or foul language. This is a place you can take your kids, says one resort owner who comes here to escape from rowdy snowmobilers. Another attraction: over a dozen bird feeders by the windows. Expect smoke. Smoking is permitted everywhere, and Tom often lights up a cigar. March, 2008
