Portage Bay Beach and Ninga Aki Pathway
The Michigan state forests' beautiful, sandy Portage Bay Beach can hardly be beat for its setting of low sand dunes and adjacent forests of mature pines–and for its peace and quiet. See also "Campgrounds." The nifty Ninga Aki Pathway (that means "Mother Earth" in Ojibwe) begins at the far end of the campground loop. The pathway is composed of two loops. The Bog Lake Loop, less than a mile long, includes some boardwalk. A bench is at the lake. The Lake Michigan Loop, under 2 miles, also has some boardwalk through low areas. The boat launch here is in shallow water, for small boats. There is no dock.
From M-183 17 miles out the peninsula, past Garden, look for Portage Bay Rd., go 6 miles east on dirt roads to the beach. (That slow drive is what keeps the crowds away.) (906) 452-6227. Path not handicap-accessible. Dogs permitted on 6-foot leash
