This town of about two thousand was originally a company town, planned and built by the giant Cleveland-Cliffs iron company, which sold the homes to its employees. An indication of how profitable iron mining had been for Cliffs, it also built the hospital, public buildings. Nearby there used to be shingle mills and charcoal kilns.
