Pine Marten Run Hiking and Riding Trail
 |
Five loop trails with interconnecting spurs go around 11 small lakes and alongside the Indian River for a short way. The entire trail system is 26 miles, and loops vary from 3.8 miles to 7.2 miles, which makes for many possibilities for short or long excursions. Trailheads are along three different roads, so hikers and riders can easily return to their vehicles.
Glacial landscapes like this, studded with lakes, are fun to explore because they vary so much in terms of their topography and plant communities. Three Adirondack shelters (available on a first-come, first-served basis) allow for easy overnights. Reservable dispersed campsites are on several of the lakes; some are highly sought-after, and advance reservations are a must in summer. Call (906) 341-5666 for a map-brochure and reservations.
The area is southwest of Steuben, in the west corner of Schoolcraft County, between the two major north-south roads that go into this lake-studded area of the Hiawatha National Forest. Riders are said to be pretty good about cleaning up after their horses.
The trails are just northwest of the intersection of CR 437 and 440, with a trailhead on each road. Another trailhead is off Forest Road 2258. (906) 341-5666; TDD (906) 341-3514. Handicap accessible: call.
