Wisconsin Rest Area/ Mini-Museum at Hurley
|
| Museum displays on the Montreal Mine, the world's deepest iron mine just west of Hurley, are an extra bonus at the Wisconsin Travel Information Center at Hurley. |
Wisconsin's state historical society sets up impressive mini-museums in welcome centers, and until 2009 this was a welcome center. The exhibits remain by the restrooms. Here there's a lot about mining and area minerals, starting out front with the giant core samples from the iron-mining era and the drilling machine that extracted them. Photographs show the Cary Mine, its drilling crew, tailing piles, and the work life of miner John Raffini.
On U.S. 2 where it meets U.S. 51. Open 24 hours. Wheelchair-accessible
