Lake Antoine Park

Lake Antoine Park
The shade provided by mature trees makes this park especially pleasant on hot summer days.

The park on spring-fed, 748-acre Lake Antoine is a handy getaway spot, thanks to its convenient location just east of Iron Mountain's north side. The views are of hills once punctuated by mine shafthouses, and of nearby suburban homes. "Although the lake is fully developed and fishing pressure is very high," writes Tom Huggler in Fish Michigan: 100 Upper Peninsula Lakes, "some consider it to be one of the best lakes in the western U.P. . . . .The west side is better for walleyes. . . . Overall the lake is a steady producer of largemouth bass."

Bluegill, crappie, perch, northern - it's an amazing fishery in an urban area, partly because of DNR stocking, but quite possibly also because of all the minnows dropped by anglers. So speculates the county parks director. A seniors' park on the northwest shore offers shore fishing and a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier.

The pleasant, well-maintained day-use part of the park is on the lake's north shore. Big oaks shade the 80 close-spaced modern campsites (see Camping) and some of the picnic area. There's a nice, long swimming beach with a shallow dropoff, benches by the water, a playground, and volleyball. At the concession stand/camp store/park office, you can pick up an annotated map of the park's short nature trail.
