Pine Mountain Resort

Pine Mountain Resort
The resort has been remodelled considerably since beer magnate Fred Pabst first built it in 1938.

This early (1938) ski resort developed by Milwaukee brewer Fred Pabst has become an attractive, full-service year-round resort with beautiful landscaping, a gorgeous, light-filled indoor pool with adjacent sauna and whirlpool, and a year-round restaurant. Hundreds of photos on soffits over the restaurant windows and doors comprise the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame. They cover a lot of territory and are surprisingly interesting even to armchair anthropologists without much interest in sports.

The 18-hole championship golf course designed by Jerry Mathews plays up the setting, with its boulders and mature pines. But keeping the place running smoothly seems to have been a problem. In February 2005 Pine Mountain Resort was sold to two Chicago couples who ski there. Attorney Paul Webster and his wife and legal partner, Sally, grew up in northern Wisconsin and learned to ski here. Their partners in this venture are residential developers. They "will bring vital new capital and enthusiasm to the resort," according to their press release. "Come back and try Pine Mountain again," they say. "You will see the positive changes already."

The ski area has a 500-foot vertical drop, NASTAR race course, snowboard park, night skiing 3 nights/week, big emphasis on kids' programs and child care. Call about lift fees, ski packages, and rentals and free instruction in downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding, and ski jumping. Check its web site for details.
