This 48-room motel is comfortable, verging on luxurious. It has a big lobby with cushy sofas and chairs, a fireplace, and a breakfast area with microwave and teas. Complimentary breakfast includes a do-it-yourself waffle-maker and sausage, biscuits and gravy. The attractive swimming pool room has a vaulted ceiling, a whirlpool, adjacent sauna and exercise room. It looks onto grass, not asphalt. One meeting room. Don & GG's, the area's best restaurant, is across the highway; a laundromat and family restaurant are next door. Snowmobile trail in rear. Wi-fi internet in all rooms. Rates change with season, weekday/weekend, and occupancy. For instance a $69 room for 2 in fall and spring costs $89 in summer, up to $159 on some special occasions. Larger rooms with microwave and minifridge are $10 more. Ask about 2-room suites and whirlpool suites. 6 or so smoking rooms. March, 2008

The 27 comfy, pleasant, clean rooms in this simple single-story motel have minifridges, phones, HBO, wi-fi internet. Continental breakfast, coffee, microwave available in lobby. Several restaurants, movies are within walking distance. Winter rates for 2: $49 (1 bed), $60 (2 beds). Other seasons: around $43 and $46. Rates for singles as low as $36. 3 smoking rooms. This well-run, 25-unit family motel enjoys a good location. Right next door is the excellent Don & GG's, under new ownership, now serving breakfast some days. A laundromat and the Breakwater Cafe are across the highway. Guests are welcome to use the microwave in the office, where coffee is available. A big continental breakfast is provided seasonally (inquire). Mini -fridges upon request. The hot tub room is extremely pleasant; next to it is an authentic Finnish sauna, gas-fired, cedar-lined, with stones. Neighborhood streets for walking are just around the corner. Owners Bob and Annette Burchell are knowledgeable about area skiing and other recreation. They are gradually refurbishing their 1965 motel to play up its vintage character.
All rooms are non-smoking. Most rooms have 2 double beds. All have phones and cable TV. Wi-fi internet in office and some rooms. Rates are by the room in ski season (in 2007 they were $78 most weekends, $88 Christmas week). Spring through fall rates were $58 for 2, $5/extra person.

This 61-room, 2-floor motel with interior halls has a pleasant, medium-size indoor pool and whirlpool. A free deluxe continental breakfast (cereal, waffles, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, etc.) is put out in the breakfast/gathering room, along with coffee and tea any time. Rates vary widely with season, weekend, special events, etc. For two adults rates range from $75 to $260. Call for updates. Ask about the 2-room executive suite which sleeps 8, and the 10 one-room suites, each with a whirlpool tub, microwave, refrigerator, and recliner. Wi-fi internet throughout. Walk to restaurants. Quiet neighborhoods nearby for walkers and joggers. No smoking. March, 2008

The 12 rooms of this charming single-story motel are decorated bed-and-breakfast style, with wallpaper and floral comforters. Arrangements vary; some have sitting areas, some king beds. All have microwaves, mini-fridges. Wi-fi internet. Continental breakfast. Sauna available. One smoking room. Approximate AAA rates for two: $48-$80. This is a large property, with a sitting area and a flower garden in front, which English co-owner Valerie Di Giorgio plants in as English a style as the weather and snow banks permit.
