Pine Tree Gallery

Pine Tree Gallery
Owner Phil Kucera has put together one of the U.P.'s finest art galleries, with frequent changing exhibits, many regional handcrafts, and a bookshop in the lower level.

Upper Peninsula towns are full of surprises. Who would predict that Ironwood would have one of the best art galleries in all the Upper Peninsula? The Pine Tree Gallery features original works by artists from the Lake Superior and Upper Great Lakes region, including some Native Americans. Natural themes predominate. Framing, some choice crafts and gifts, and books of regional interest round out the offerings of this mainstay of the area cultural scene.
Lake Superior generally provides a theme for changing exhibits, sometimes group shows, sometimes featuring one or two artists. Call for current exhibits, and for occasional concerts. Most concerts are by regional singer-songwriters who have just released an album. Also, some artist workshops are held, teaching, for instance, watercolor technique or illustrated journal ideas.

An added Pine Tree bonus: owner Phil Kucera is happy to provide visitor information and annotate maps, with directions and tips for backroads adventures here and in the Porcupine Mountains. He grew up in Ironwood, left for Chicago, and came back with his wife in 1975 as Chicago's growing sprawl made them long for a life more connected with nature. They're quite involved in the local historical society as well as the arts. Phil had become acquainted with the art world when his interest in woodworking led him to work with a Chicago restorer of antique frames. Longtime assistant Amanda Szot started here as a high schooler, went on to the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and missed home so much that she came back to work here.
