Trek & Trail

Trek & Trail
Affable asistant Lucas Daniels handles the bike repair duties at the shop, owned and managed by silent sports affcionado Dave Johnson. Dave's a good person to ask for good skiing, paddling, and biking spots in the area.

Dave Johnson, Ironwood native and silent sports enthusiast, offers equipment, accessories, and supporting maps and advice for cross-country and downhill skiing, mountain biking, snowshoeing, and fly fishing. There's also room for kayaks and canoes in its handsome log building on U.S. 2. Bike repairs are done on the premises.

Backpacks, outdoor gear, and functional casual clothing make up over half of Trek & Trail's business. The idea is to offer selection and quality better than that of big sporting goods chains, but not necessarily expensive. Brands include Sugoi cycling gear, Black Diamond backpacks, and Patagonia outdoor wear and casual clothing.
This is basically an active outdoor store, with a department for fly fishing, Dave's passion. He himself leads guided fly-fishing trips on the Brule River in Wisconsin, a trout stream. Fly fishing is a tricky business, what with 135 species of mayflies and with trout that have extremely selective conditioned responses to local insects. Local knowledge of insects and rivers is what small, personal shops like this have to offer, Johnson points out. (His local colleagues at Black Bear Sports down the road are also knowledgeable fly-fishing guides, he adds.)
