Near one of the Upper Peninsula's main farming areas, the volunteer museum of the Kinross Heritage Society commemorates pioneer farming and the logging that preceded it. Displays include a blacksmith shop, shoe repair shop, and barber shop. An 1882 log cabin and a 1902 one-room schoolhouse are outside. There's a half-mile nature trail through 20 acres of mature pines, maples, and oaks. Much of the fun of visiting the U.P. is meeting old-timers at museums like this. Here people can tell you about the impact of the now-closed Kincheloe Air Force Base across the way, and the prison that followed it. On Tone Rd. about a mile east of I-75, across from the Chippewa County Fairground. (906) 495-7110. Open Mem. to Labor Day, Thurs-Sun 1-5 and by appointment. Donations welcome. Handicap accessible.
