An excellent site listing links to museums, parks & sites, mines, general information

U.P.-WIDE SITES

John December has created a unique and useful site, UP bluewww.december.com/places/up/blue.html — that provides a vast array of links to U.P.-related sites, many of them on topics you might not ever find otherwise, such as the Lake Superior Chess Association, 15 U.P. periodicals including all U.P. newspapers, and the many types of public transportation across the peninsula.

At www.pastypower.com you'll find Yooper humor and product promotion from U.P. enthusiast Wheaty Carlson, inventor of the Fudgie Pasty, Toivo & Eino's Secret Pasty Sauce, the Pasty Pillow, and more. See Arnold dig into a pasty after losing a bet with Governor Jennifer Granholm!

GREAT LAKES SITES

Boatnerd, www.boatnerd.com, is a boatwatchers' site extraordinaire, rich, complex, and meaty. It covers Great Lakes/Seaway commercial shipping news in the U.S. and Canada. AND it incorporates lots of extra goodies like the Great Lakes Bookshelf (knowledgeable capsule reviews), notes and links to all Greak Lakes maritime museums, photo galleries with thousands of ship photos from fans and site editors, and Dave Swayze's "Great Lakes Shipwreck File," encompassing over 4,700 wrecks — "the most complete and accurate list of losses of Great Lakes commercial vessels in existence." Events calendar, great links on marine history, ports, and more.

SITES ON SPECIFIC U.P. REGIONS

Western U.P. Convention & Visitors Bureau, www.westernup.com, has a good site for events and recreational opportunities in Ironwood, Bessemer, Wakefield, Silver City & Ontonagan, Lake Gogebic, Hurley, and Watersmeet. There's a comprehensive, up-to-date calendar of events; current ski and snowmobile conditions and useful driving tips; and a big list of parks, playgrounds, and picnic spots.

Iron County's well designed integrated site, www.iron.org, includes pages and links about area attractions and lodgings, events calendars for individual communities, and galleries of historic photos.

Copper Range Railroad, www.copperrange.org, is a terrific Copper Country site, with evocative old Keweenaw postcards, historical Keweenaw railroad photos, and contemporary photos by Kevin Musser, who created and maintains the site. He even has a page that allows you to pick out and send a vintage postcard from the region.
