Check out the Schoolcraft County Chamber of Commerce at 1000 W. Lakeshore/U.S. 2 in Manistique. Call or stop by the information-packed log cabin with Paul Bunyan in front, just west of the harbor next to Burger King. (906) 341-5010; (888) 819-7420. Open year-round. Mon-Fri 9-5, Sat 12-5. Open Sun noon-4 in summer. Off-season hours vary. . . Also helpful: City of Manistique . . .The Hiawatha National Forest office is in the stone building just east of downtown at 449 East Lakeshore/U.S. 2. (906) 341-5666. Open Mon-Fri 8-4:30 from mid-May thru Oct. Otherwise closed Tues & Thurs. It gives handouts & advice for camping, hiking, canoeing, fishing, and other recreation on the area's extensive national forest land. Or contact the Rapid River office, (906) 474-6442, on U.S. 2 just east of Rapid River.
EVENTS. The 2nd weekend in July, Folkfest in downtown Manistique is a hometown festival with live music and dancing, food booths, games, a giant slide, pet show, a 12k and 5k run, art show, and more. Friday thru Sunday. Call (906) 341-5010. For details, visit the Schoolcraft County Chamber of Commerce. . . The 2nd Saturday in August from noon to 5, Heritage Days at Fayette Townsite brings dramatic performances, costumed reenactments, and 19th-century children's games, plus food and pie. PICNIC PROVISIONS AND PLACES
■ The big Jack's Fresh Market supermarket on the east edge of Manistique, next to Pamida, has an indoor café and large deli section, to eat in or take out: pasties, fried chicken, salads, sandwiches. Of course, there's takeout from any local restaurant. (See restaurant section.) And there's a Pizza Hut on U.S. 2 just east of the bridge.
■ In a natural area right on Lake Michigan on U.S. 2 opposite Jack's, Lakeview Park has a picnic area and playground. And it's right on Manistique's 1 1/2-mile, hard-surfaced boardwalk.

■ More than just a roadside rest area, beautiful Rogers Park, 4 miles west of Manistique, is the area's sandy Lake Michigan swimming beach. Towering pines give some picnic pavilions lots of shade.

■ Remote and beautiful: the grounds and picnic area at Seul Choix Point Lighthouse & Museums, 8 miles south of U. S. 2 from Gulliver. 15 minutes from Manistique.
