Grand Island Scenic Overlook

Grand Island scenic overlook
Once again the state's Department of Transportation takes the troube to create access off a highway to a splendid vista. Grand Island is right before you. The Pictured Rocks are 5-6 miles away along the shoreline to the right.

It's well worth stopping at this Michigan Department of Transportation rest area and park, perched high above M-28 west of Munising. The overlook platform offers an excellent view of the shoreline and Grand Island, along with a relief map and interpretive display about the island, so you can understand what you're looking at. Get there by the short path through the beech woods. Back by the parking lot are picnic tables and grills and a rest room.

Look for sign, access road up a steep hill off M-28 just opposite Tourist Park, 2 1/2 miles west of Munising. Look for the blue and yellow "Scenic turnout MDOT" sign. Closed in winter. Handicap accessible
