Tannery Falls

Even among the Upper Peninsula's many wonderful waterfalls, Tannery Falls is special. It's in a canyon-like setting, with the bonus of an equally wonderful sandstone walk to reach it. The Penroses nicely describe the canyon as feeling like you're in an inverted bowl. Tannery Creek drops almost 40 feet here, first in steps, and then in a one fell swoop. Long private property, this special treat is now open to the public thanks to its purchase by the Michigan Nature Association.
This is not marked, but it is fairly easy to locate. The walk is muddy at the start but it is not a hard walk. It's near Munising At the blinker, where M-28 makes a right angle, go north (on road that some of our sources indicate is East Munising Avenue). Soon, after turning north, a road goes left to Munising Falls. The road is a "Y" at this point, go to the right of the "Y" and park. Walk past the south side of a boarded up house (see below) and continue for two hundred yards to the waterfall. IF this way is too muddy, take the trail on the south side of Tannery Creek.
