Flowing Well Picnic Area & Sturgeon River fishing

On the banks of the Sturgeon River, this small picnic area and campground, part of the Hiawatha National Forest, make a nice place not too far from main roads. A hundred gallons of water a minute flow from a test well for oil made in 1929. Today it provides drinking water, albeit hard and sulfurous.

The mixed forest here is full of wildflowers in spring. "Many feel the fishing is terrific, but the brook trout, steelhead, and salmon here may be wary and elusive," warns the Forest Service handout. For those with canoes, short canoe trips of three and four miles to and from Flowing Well can be taken by putting upstream at the 14 Mile Bridge of Forest Highway 13 or taking out downstream at CR 497 just south of U.S. 2.

From U.S. 2 at Nahma Junction, take Forest Hwy. 13 three miles north to Flowing Well. (906) 474-6442. Free except for camping. Handicap access: call.
