Big Knob and Crow Lake Pathways/ Lake Superior State Forest
 |
These interesting short pathways, 3 1/2 miles south of U.S. 2, make for nice little adventures for campers and motorists, with a meal or a snack at Big Knob picnic area near Lake Michigan. The Crow Lake Pathway, a 2 1/2 mile loop, climbs along a dune ridge with a view of Crow Lake in 3/4 mile. Then it descends into a flatland of ferns, with lots of blueberries in August.
The trail passes by a marsh before climbing low dunes and reaching a stand of old-growth white pines. Kids may enjoy the dramatically shorn trees damaged by lightening. To complete the loop, the path goes along Big Knob Road for about half a mile. The trailhead is at the south end of the flooding. Parking area is on right (west) side of road.
The 1/4 mile Big Knob Pathway has stairs (recently rebuilt) up the side of a wooded sand dune, unusually high for this area, to an overlook. It looks out across Knob Lake and the surrounding marshland. On a nice day you can see to Engadine and to Lake Michigan. Canada geese flock here in spring and early fall, making for a lively, noisy scene. The trailhead is across the road from Crow Lake trailhead and parking area.
From U.S. 2 about 1 1/2 miles west of Engadine or about 4 miles east of Gould City, look for the brown sign to the state forest campground. Take twisty Big Knob Rd., recently improved, 3 1/2 miles south. Park by the Crow Lake trailhead on the west side of Big Knob Rd. (906) 293-5131. Handicap accessible: no. Free.
