Peshtigo in 1871, one month before the horrific fire.

This rather plain Wisconsin lumber town and farm center is best known for the devastating 1871 fire that killed almost 1,000 of its citizens. Peshtigo (pronounced "PESH-tih-GO") developed near the mouth of the Peshtigo River seven miles south of Marinette. It has continued to grow over the years, unlike many of its neighbors.

The Badger Paper Mills, with some 200 employees, is the biggest business here. One of its papermaking machines produces coated papers used for packaging chewing gum and candy. Peshtigo manufacturers also produce document forms, store fixtures, and sausage casings.

The lower reaches of the Peshtigo River are said to be well stocked yet lightly fished for trout, walleye, smallmouth bass, and salmon. Boat access is at the Peshtigo River Wildlife Area at the river's mouth. Badger Park on the Peshtigo River has a 10,000-square-foot playground fort, plus camping for tents and campers.
