| | Big freighters pass right by Lime Island. | Raber, once home to a huge sawmill, is a now a tiny place, just a public dock, some houses, a summer-only motel, some resorts, and a small store-gas station-laundromat. Raber today is best known for the Raber Bay Bar & Grill, a very popular bar and restaurant, and for fishing in Raber Bay, especially for herring beginning around July 4, for smelt whenever they happen to run in summer, and for walleye in winter and at ice-out.
Three and a half miles offshore from the Raber dock, closer to St. Joseph Island in Canada, is mile-long Lime Island, for decades a fueling station for ships, now an inviting destination for boaters.

Raber's packs in hungry diners from all around to a rather remote spot on the St. Mary's River overlooking Lime Island. Delicious all-you-can-eat fresh fish dinners (around $9 and up) with a good soup/salad/dessert bar are the big attraction, but there's a full menu from burgers to steaks. The vintage bar dates from Prohibition's repeal in 1931. Now it's greatly expanded, with good views of passing vessels. Full bar.
