ROCK HARBOR AREA

Five Fingers Area

The channels and ridges at the island's northeastern tip are known for their rocky scenery. But these unsheltered waters are exposed to bad weather coming off the expanse of Lake Superior to the northeast. The Sandy's all-day North Side Cruise on Wednesday. It goes completely around the Five Fingers and west on the Amygdaloid Channel to McCargoe Cove, which extends several miles into the island's interior. On the cove passengers might take an optional hike, the steep, difficult, three-mile trek to Minong Mine, site of an ancient copper mine. A park ranger may give a talk there. Bring a lunch.
