Lookout Louise

From Lookout Louise hikers can see across the Five Fingers area to see the massive granite mountain northwest of Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Lookout Louise is the Brockway Mountain of Isle Royale. It's the northeastern terminus of Greenstone Ridge and the end of the Greenstone Ridge Trail. This high point offers an amazing, map-like view of many bays and islands. This area is a virtual microcosm of the island and its flora and fauna. It's especially beautiful in the fog. On a clear day the smoke-stacks of Thunder Bay can be seen. (Wilderness enthusiasts forget how near this industrial metropolis is!)

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9 (confirm schedule in The Greenstone), the M.V. Sandy takes visitors from Rock Harbor four miles around Scoville Point to the trailhead at Hidden Lake, a place where moose are often seen. A park ranger leads a guided one-mile hike to Lookout Louise, a 320-foot climb. From there, you can return with the boat or, if you take a lunch, take a lengthy 10.2 miles back to Rock Harbor. Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
