Lookout Louise

Lookout Louise
J. Belote

The Brockway Mountain of Isle Royale is Lookout Louise. It's the northeastern end of Greenstone Ridge and the end of the Greenstone Ridge Trail. It offers an amazing, map-like view of many bays and islands. A virtual microcosm of the island and its flora and fauna, this area is especially beautiful in the fog.

On a clear day the smokestacks of Thunder Bay can be seen. On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 to 12:30 the M.V. Sandy takes visitors from Rock Harbor four miles around Scoville Point to the trailhead at Hidden Lake, a place where moose are often seen. A park ranger leads a guided hike a mile to Lookout Louise, a 320-foot climb. (Cost of cruise: $38, or $19 for children 12 and under.) From here, you can return with the boat or, if you prepare for it, hike 10.2 miles back to Rock Harbor.

Of course, you could also arrive by your own boat, or hike. Cruises are first-come, first-served and weather dependent.
