Art Gallery of Algoma
 |
Small public arts facilities can be exciting because of their focus — on exposing a general population to the visual arts. Here a contemporary building frames river views. Two large galleries allow for 24 exhibits a year, of artists with international, Canadian, and local reputations. The shows we saw were definitely stimulating, not just accessible in a comfortable way. For a city of under 100,000 in a remote area, the gallery is an impressive institution.
The growing permanent collection includes a number of steel sculptures in the outdoor garden which might be easy to miss. And the beautiful gallery shop includes handmade pottery and glassware, Ontario souvenirs, and art-related books and gifts. The adjacent sales and rental gallery handles paintings, prints, and sculptures, mostly by area artists.
For gallery talks, films, workshops, and other events, search for the gallery site online, or call.
At the foot of East Street at Bay, on the river next to the public library. From the bridge, take Bay St. east. (705) 949-9067. Open daily year-round except holidays. Mon-Sat 9-5, Sun 1-4. Admission $3 Canadian, children free. Wheelchair-accessible: mostly.
