Sault Ste. Marie Museum

-
"Ontario eclectic" is the architectural label for this former post office. It opened in 1906, built of sandstone excavated when the Canadian locks were dug. The bulbous corner clock tower was a 1912 addition. No building like this will likely be found in the United States. Interior details like the staircase and the three-story skylight are interesting in their own right.

At the museum are a First Nations (i.e., Native American) birchbark dwelling, maritime and other history exhibits about the Algoma District, a hands-on children's Discovery Gallery with a vintage dress-up corner, and galleries for industrial history, sports, and military history, plus art shows and changing exhibits. Display techniques are low budget, sometimes irritatingly so. This museum is for people already interested in the history of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; the River of History Museum on the U.S. side does a much better job of communicating to outsiders.
