North Country Trail Hike

-
Blue diamond
Don Hunt
Blue diamond markers make it hard to get lost on the North Country Trail

With 2 vehicles parked at the beginning and end, you can hike this pleasing 4-mile section of the immense North Country Trail in a couple of hours and not have to retrace your steps. The trail passes an enormous variety of habitats: deep woods, swamps, beaver ponds, blackberry, raspberry & thimbleberry patches, many varieties of mushrooms, steep ridges, shallow creeks. The signature little blue diamond insignia nailed to trees clearly mark the path.

Head west about 13 miles on M-38 from Baraga and turn south on Prickett Dam Road, then bear to the left on Forest Highway 2270 and head south until the road loops back around north to the bridge over the Sturgeon River. Park Car One there. Return back up 2270 to South Laird Rd (if you reach 2276, you've gone too far). Turn left (west) on South Laird Rd. for 1.6 miles and look for blue diamond on tree on left, marking the part of the trail and park Car Two where this hike begins.
