Silver Image Studio

-
This attractive studio/gallery shows and sells photos and posters of the late photographer Dan Urbanski's beautiful images of weather, waves, waterfalls, plants, and favorite scenes in the Porcupines and the western U.P. They can also be seen and purchased on-line at quietlywild.com. "Wilderness Diary," "Photo Collections," and "Icons of U.P. Highways "present an artist's close-up takes on the changing seasons and years. No one has been more visibly associated with appreciating the Porkies than the late photographer Dan Urbanski, who died in 2004. Dan gave his energy to many projects and was instrumental in starting Friends of the Porkies, which is going strong today.
3SC Dan in kayak

Born in Hamtramck, Detroit's famous Polish enclave, Dan had spent summers at his grandmother's in nearby Wakefield, listening to his dad share tales with his boyhood chums. After college, he and two buddies traveled around Lake Superior for threee months as a sort of Bicentennial celebration. They largely lived off the fish they caught and spent only a few hundred dollars on the entire trip. That's when he took up photography seriously and got to know Silver City better. It was the friendliest U.P. place of all he'd seen. The next year he opened his studio here.

A friend captured Dan's spirit with telling details: "Dan knew where to go, when and under what conditions to capture Nature at her most photogenic. . . . Whether picking up litter on M-107, tallying ski-race results, or running a stable fly 'trap line,' Dan was the first to step up to the plate. Generous, intelligent, scientifically minded, curious. Outdoor enthusiast, mountain biker, kayaker, camper, hiker, photographer."
