Beaufort Lake
The southern-most of the three lakes, Beaufort presents this pleasant view from the quiet little campground off Beaufort Lake Road.

The norhtwest-to-southeast chain of Ruth, George, and Beaufort Lakes, bisected by highway U.S. 41, gives the name to this locale. Even during the late 19th century lumber boom, Three Lakes was never much more than a small station on what was then the Marquette, Houghton, and Ontonagon Railroad. (Now it's a spur of the Canadian National Railway system that ends just past Baraga. Its trains take logs to paper mills.)

Fishing and snowmobiling are the area's economic mainstays. Hundreds of cottages dot the area. Stumps Tavern is the local watering hole. Four miles west is the Cozy Inn bar and restaurant; four miles east in Michigamme is Mount Shasta.

Ruth Lake
Ruth Lake just north of U.S. 41 is the northern-most of the three lakes.

EDGEWATER MOTEL

This simple, inexpensive waterfront motel on U.S.41/M-28 faces the channel between Ruth Lake north of highway 41 and George Lake to the south. Fishing is for bass, crappie, northern, walleye, perch. Many picnic tables and some grills take advantage of the pleasant setting. In winter they custom groom a snowmobile trail to connect with the U.P.'s 1000+ mile trail system. Two large group rooms with full kitchens in the one-story wing are from $60 to $70/night, with three and five beds. Eight units in the two-story wing are $35 (two people, one queen) and $40 (two doubles). The upstairs units have a balcony with view. All rooms have airconditioning, minifridges, and a mix of old and new furniture. The color TVs get NBC and PBS. Smoking discouraged. The interiors are nicer than the low rates and wide aluminum exterior siding lead you to expect. Guests can use office phone and check e-mail on the computer. Free coffee, tea, and cocoa. Individually controlled central heat comes from a wood-fueled central boiler. Rowboats and canoes are free for guests. Near Craig Lake State Park, within 20 minutes of 32 Baraga County
waterfalls. Expect highway noise.

THREE LAKES MOTEL

This simple 10-unit motel on U.S. 41 is immaculately clean, convenient, and a very good deal — $35 for single rooms, $40 for rooms with two double beds. No-smoking available. All rooms have microwaves and minifridges. Not air-conditioned. Two TV channels. No phones; a new tower may improve cell phone reception. For now, guests can use the office phone and Internet access. There's coffee and hot chocolate in the comfy office, and a card table. Stump's Tavern with food is right next door. Cozy Inn is 4 miles west, Mt. Shasta 4 miles east in Michigamme.
Owner-managers D. Moses and her husband, Fred Cox, are snowmobile enthusiasts and outdoors-lovers who moved here from southwest Michigan to do what they love. They both fish, too. He repairs snowmobiles and ATVs (three ORV trails are nearby) and is a bear guide.
