Susan-Twin Lake Java
Susan Mallow making coffee with her son by her side.

Michael Mallow serves coffee that's fresh-roasted to order on the premises, then ground and brewed, with a choice of 18 varieties. Owner Michael Mallow buys beans that are always organic and shade-grown, but not necessarily free trade certified. Roasters pay for free trade certification, at every step. He says that he is always conscious that farmers are treated fairly. But his brown bags of coffee sold at the co-op are not designated free trade. His coffee can be ordered via mtmall@up.net.

Twin Lakes Java is the former home of Ivar and Fannie Wiita's Twin Lakes Tavern. It's a cool vintage setting for a coffeehouse. The Art Deco back bar, with neon and mellow wood, was delivered in 1942. It alone is worth a stop. Wireless internet is in the works.
Specialty foods chosen to make summer meals at the cottage elegant include chocolates; French, German, and Italian wines; and Seabear smoked Alaska salmon, chili, chowder, and pasta sauces in pouches for quick, healthy meals even while camping. Omaha Steaks can be ordered to arrive in four days.

There's a rear deck in back. Look for young Murphy Mallow's lemonade stand with fresh-squeezed lemonade, at least as long as he's saving for a bike. (—April, 2008)

Twin Lakes Java
A wonderful oasis along M-26: great, fresh-roasted coffee, a deck out back, plus gourmet wines, cheeses, and meat. The original Art Deco back bar with glow-from-within lighting reflects its earlier use as a neighborhood tavern.
