The Ojibwa burial ground.

Zeba, halfway to Pequaming on the shoreline road northeast of L'Anse, was the site of Father Baraga's first mission in the area, built in 1831. The old mission churches are still there today - the Catholic church on the Pequaming Road and the Methodist church on the bluff above. In the nearby Ojibwa cemetery from the 1840s, spirit houses (tiny houses used instead of European-style cemetery markers) have been rebuilt and maintained. The cemetery off Skanee Road two miles outside L'Anse at the end of Indian Cemetery Road, which is clearly marked. Skanee Road is the continuation of Main Street in downtown L'Anse.

Clearcuts along the way are unsettling in this timeless place. They don't affect the Pinery Lakes Trail near the cemetery, an 8-mile series of groomed cross-country ski loops through the woods.
